I recently attended Grow L+A’s Five-2-Farm Roundtable discussion at the Lewiston Public Library on Tuesday. The organization talked about their plans to renovate Bates Mill 5 to house an urban farm, grocer, health and wellness center, and outdoor farmers market. After the plans were shared to the group, we discussed our opinions on the benefits of these renovations and other suggestions we had for the project as individual tables. I presented our group’s ideas to the rest of the attendees. We then chose new groups based on the aspected we liked best about the plans. I spent the rest of the event in the “Building a Healthy Community Group” where I talked about the possibility of connecting people to the source of their food by letting them tour the farm and the processing area all in the same location. Overall, it sounded like an awesome project that will not only save this historic building from demolition, but will bring new jobs, a grocery within walking distance, and create healthy communal space. Very excited to hear more and possibly continue my involvement!
